Applying for the NSERC postgraduate scholarship.

This is one of the best scholarships that a student can get for graduate studies. You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to apply. The NSERC award at the Master's level is $17,300 for one year (you would then apply for an extension to this award for your 2nd year). If you do your graduate studies in Alberta, you will also receive an I-Core top-up of $12,000 a year. The NSERC award at the doctoral level is $21,000 per year for up to 3 years. Students that go to a University in Alberta receive an I-Core top-up of $15,000 a year. NOTE: CGS (Canada Graduate Scholarships) amounts including top-up are different, please see NSERC's website at www.nserc.ca . Please note that you do not apply for CGS, the top PGS applicants are offered the CGS. Please read on for more information. FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS: if you are currently an undergraduate student or have finished your degree not more than 12 months ago and have a GPA of at least 3.7 in each of your last two year, you should be applying. Even if you are not considering graduate school right now, circumstances may change and you will not want to miss this opportunity. Thus if your GPA is 3.7 or higher in EACH of your last two year, we strongly encourage you to complete the application. FOR CURRENT GRADUATE STUDENTS (Masters): you can apply as long as you have not completed more than 12 months of graduate studies (in the program for which you are requesting funds) as of December 31, 2005. You should also have a 3.7 GPA in EACH of your last 2 years. You will be eligible for this award for 1 year only. Also if you will be finishing your M.Sc. within the next year and are thinking about continuing into a Ph.D., then you should apply now for the Ph.D. fellowship. FOR CURRENT GRADUATE STUDENTS (Ph.D.): you can apply as long as you have not completed more than 24 months of graduate studies (in the program for which you are requesting funds) as of December 31, 2005. You should also have a 3.7 GPA in EACH of your last 2 years. We strongly encourage anybody who meets the criteria to complete the application. Please read all the information on the NSERC website at www.nserc.ca. The application form is Form 200.

Alberta Ingenuity studentships

The application deadline is January 31, 2006.
These awards have two advantages over NSERC:
      (1) foreign students are eligible,
      (2) they are for 5 years at the PhD level.
Although competition for these has been very stiff in the past I expect
there will be a significant increase in the number of these this year
so considering nominating any "A" student in the first year of his/her
program, or any top student who has applied to enter our graduate
   program under your supervision.
   See
   http://www.albertaingenuity.ca/grants_awards/students_guidelines.php

I also note there is a new, "fast-track" studentship for outstanding
   candidates currently outside Alberta.
