Relational Data Visualisation in 3D (Independent Study)
Instructor: Osmar R. Zaiane
| |
OBJECTIVE/DESCRIPTION:
This course will investigate approaches for data visualisation in 3D
in the context of the VizRoom, and the use of a relational database as
data source for the CAVE. The main objective is to explore the
possibilities to visualise, analyse, and manipulate a
multi-dimensional data cube by projecting data from a relational
database onto the three walls of the CAVE and interacting with the
displayed data for on-line analytical processing.
The course will consist of a series of discussions on recent relevant
research papers and findings., the implementation of some concepts of
data visualisation in the VizRoom, and the preparation of a final
report with annotated bibliography.
TOPICS:
The course will cover the following topics:
- Use of the VizRoom for data visualisation and interaction;
- Interfacing the VizRoom with a relational database;
- Data cube representation;
- Concept hierarchy representation;
- Data cube visualisation.
GRADING:
Annotated bibliography (20%),
Discussions (20%),
Implementation (20%),
Progress report (20%),
Final paper (20%).
TEXTBOOK and REFERENCES:
There is no textbook for this course. Research papers will be selected
from a variety of journals and conference proceedings, such as CHI,
SIGGRAPH, KDD, SIGMOD, etc.
