Position: Research Associate: Genome Selection Methods (Beef Cattle)

Details A Research Associate position is available for up to three years as part of a collaborative project aimed at developing genomic selection methods and tools for beef cattle. The position, at the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Canada) will involve the implementation and application of statistical and machine learning methods for predicting traits from genotype information. A database will also be created to facilitate data management and sharing. As part of the bovine genomics program at the University of Alberta, the candidate will have access to advanced computing facilities and will work with experts in the areas of genomics, quantitative genetics, molecular biology, and bioinformatics.

Requirements:

  • A graduate degree in bioinformatics, computer science, statistics, or a related field.
  • Strong programming skills in Perl, Java, or Ruby.
  • Experience with machine learning and applied statistics, and related software tools such as R, SAS, or MATLAB.
  • Experience analyzing large biological data sets.
  • Experience with MySQL and web application development.
  • Ability to work in a Linux/Mac OS X environment.
  • Ability to work independently and creatively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
